Tips for Women Traveling Alone to China or Abroad

Here are some of the tips for women traveling alone to China or to any other foreign country on business:

• Dress conservatively.  Different cultures have different standards. When in doubt, always choose the more conservative outfit over flair.  Also, check what the local women are wearing when you arrive.
• If you have a choice, always choose a flight that arrives during the day and not at night.
• Going from the airport to your hotel can seem like a safari with hagglers and strangers trying to grab and carry your bag for you. Try to make arrangements for a ride from the airport to your hotel prior to leaving for your trip.
• When your driver drops you off, tell him/her to watch you enter the building safely before the cab departs.
• Insist on having a hotel room on the 2nd floor or higher.  Also avoid the ends of the hotel near exits and stairwells where someone could hide.
• Avoid unwanted phone calls late at night by disconnecting your phone.
• When you are eating or drinking alone, bring your briefcase, files or anything work related.  Spread them out and pretend to work.  Let everyone know that you are a business woman here on business. You are not a single woman looking for love.
• Ask the hotel staff which areas are safe and which areas should be avoided.
• When meeting a stranger about business, choose a busy public place not your hotel.
• When you are using public transit, try to pick another woman to sit next to.
• If you are unsure about a situation, trust your gut feeling.  Most of the times you will be right.  Beware that some parts of the world find foreign women in their country to be extremely desirable.  You'll natural get stares because you are a foreigner. But beware of those curiosity stares that turn out to stares of desire.

Women Traveling Alone - It’s Not All Doom & Gloom
